like, people always try to do that with games too, make there be an even number in each house/year, but that's a game, and we're allowed to tweak stuff
but like, there is no reason houses/genders/years would be equal every year, right?

I remember reading a fic once about how terribly awkward Percy and Oliver's dorm was because in the reality of the fic they were the only two. And like YOU CAN HAVE FUN WITH IT

and like, I imagine certain historical events can affect the personality of a whole generation
like, baby boomers have certain things in common
or millenials. like, are millenials like... more slytherin leaning?
did WWII era make a lot of gryffindors? and if that happens, is there just an overwhelming gryff majority for a few years

I understand even dorms from a practicality point in games, but I have always agreed that realistically they shouldn't be even. Mostly because of the later alphabet sortings you were talking about because the last person would just end up wherever is left

Right! Zeller is definitely getting whatever is left. Plus, some years will just have bigger numbers of students, and uneven numbers gender wise.

Plus, if you assume five kids per dorm, ten kids per house per year, that adds up to seventy kids in each house total, which us only 280 kids at Hogwarts total, which seems low to me, so maybe Harry's year was actually a small year.

Yeah, JKR has said something about Hogwarts was meant to be bigger but she couldn't mention all the characters so it seems small (or something similar idr the actual quote) and based on the house tables/Quidditch matches there definitely seem to be more than 280 students. So I think years would be different sizes and dorms of all sizes and different gender balances

Right! Like, we don't get that many NAMED characters, but the crowds of students that seem to be moving about way exceeds ~300 or so.

Yes! That's why I find it weird when games that let you choose your own names get insistent on "canon surnames" unless it's for a muggleborn. The however many names we know obviously aren't the entire wizarding community

Right! And it's not like even the old wizarding families are super unique - sure, you have names like Weasley that JKR made up, but you also have Potter which is also a super common muggle name - so why can't you just pick a name?
